Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Walter Harris, Jr., Ph.D., announces two interim administrative appointments for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Alfred L. Lorenz, the A. Louis Read Distinguished Professor in Communications, has agreed to serve as interim dean of the newly established College of Social Sciences. Dr. Lorenz has been a faculty member in the Department of Communications since 1981. He previously served as chair of the department. Professor Lorenz will bring a wealth of experience to bear in his new role as he spends the next year organizing the new college. Dr. Lorenz earned a bachelor of science in English from Marquette University and a doctor of philosophy in journalism from Southern Illinois University.
Robert A. Thomas, Loyola Chair in Environmental Communications, has agreed to serve as interim director of the new School of Mass Communication. Dr. Thomas is one of the university’s outstanding faculty members. He has held the Chair in Environmental Communications since 1996. Dr. Thomas has an impressive record of scholarly and civic engagement. Dr. Thomas earned a bachelor of science in zoology from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana-Lafayette), a doctor of philosophy in Vertebrate Zoology from Texas A&M University, and served a post-doctoral fellowship in biochemistry at Louisiana State University Medical Center.
