Let’s talk.

August 21, 2006
Here’s the way the fall semester is shaping up…

1.  I will be in my office this week — up until about Friday noon.  I will then be out of town until Monday.  If you want to see me this week to talk about your individual situation, please do.  I will be in my office during the afternoons through Thursday.  I can also meet with you after 5 pm, if necessary.
2.  Due to decreased enrollment in the grad program (no new students), we are unlikely to offer the graduate core classes as such.  For those of you who still need core classes to graduate, you can register with me for independent study courses (don’t know exactly what course number yet) that will substitute for Mass Com Theory and/or Mass Com Research.  You need to do that THIS SEMESTER.
3.  Likewise, those of you who need grad elective course credits to graduate, you had best sign up for those hours THIS SEMESTER.  You need to make arrangements to officially register for classes THIS WEEK.  Again, I will be in my office through Thursday.
4.  If you only need to complete your thesis, you will need to do that no later than spring 07.  What I would like to do is, if possible, get all your course requirements satisfied in the fall, and then finish the final thesis course credits in the spring.  But this plan can be adjusted based on your input.
5.  Practically speaking, the above will apply primarily to those who are within a MINIMUM of nine hours of graduation — including six hours of thesis credit.  This means that you if you still need to take one course (regardless of what that course is) AND you still need to complete your thesis, we can likely accommodate you during the upcoming academic year.  For those who need more than nine hours to graduate, however, you may need to look at cognate courses available in other departments and/or at other universities.  These courses may still count toward the M.A. degree according to the stipulations listed in the most recent graduate catalog.

The fall semester approaches.

Here’s what I recently (yesterday) sent to the continuing grad students on my spring 06 mailing list…

> Hi all,
> This is going out to my last recorded graduate student
> mailing list (06S).  Hopefully, it will be pertinent to
> those reading it.  I will be updating the blog connected
> to my Loyola homepage soon (within the next week).  Check
> there for further updates.

> We are about to crank up the fall semester, and I need to
> know 1) if you wish to complete the M.A. degree program at
> Loyola, and 2) what hours/courses/credits you need to take
> in order to do that.

> As of now, you may complete the grad program, receive an
> M.A. degree, and be done with it all no later than summer
> 07 — and much preferably no later than spring 07.

> semesters) hold your peace.

Hopefully, everyone got the above and, if necessary, will contact me soon.

During the fall 06 and spring 07 semesters, I will offer a three-hour course (probably CMMNA899 in both semesters) for those who will be attempting to complete the M.A. degree within the coming academic year.  These two courses may then substitute for required core courses CMMNA701 (Mass Com Theory) and CMMNA702 (Mass Com Research), which will NOT be offered as such.  These two courses can also be used, if needed, for elective course credit.  You must, however, register for all thesis hours through the normal process (selecting a thesis committee and committee chair, getting your thesis prospectus approved by your thesis committee chair, etc.).

Further details will appear here as I compile the information you send to me.
