Emailed update — beginning 07 semester

January 17, 2007
Hi all,

For all working on a thesis this semester, I would
like to hold you to the schedule you submitted last semester for your M.A. degree completion.  In order to consolidate those schedules, I would like for you
to tweak them as necessary and resubmit them (in reply to this email) by the end
of this week.  I will print out the copies you send me, tape them to my wall,
and email back to you if I see any problems ahead.  Also resubmit the title of
your thesis and the *three* members of your thesis committee (each of which should
have, by this time, been contacted by you and agreed to serve as a thesis
committee member).

I would like to meet with you at least once every
two weeks — more if you feel the need.  The best time for an in-person meeting
will be Wednesday afternoons after 3:15pm.  If this is a horrible day for you,
let me know.  I would also like to learn how close to 3:15 you will be able to
meet.  I can make arrangements to stay after 5pm on Wednesdays, but you will
need to persuade me in a reply to this message in order for me to do
so.

In general, I only want to meet with you in
response to a chapter or chapters you have earlier submitted to me.  Ideally, you
will submit chapters of your thesis on a biweekly basis, give me a week or so
to go over them, and then meet with me (if I remain chair of your thesis
committee) to hear my feedback.   In general, I
will prefer to give my feedback to you orally rather than in
writing.

Let the good times roll.

Spring 07 — last call.

January 3, 2007

Grad students:  Remember this is the last semester in which you can receive graduate credit in the School of Mass Communication.  See me if you have questions; my spring office hours will be posted on my website.

For this semester, if you need to complete thesis hours, you will sign up for those (CMMNA898) through your thesis chair.  This will require you submitting a thesis prospectus (if you have not already done so) and obtaining my signature and the signature of your thesis chair on the proper forms.  You will most likely have to come on campus to do this.

If you need to complete non-thesis hours, you may either sign up for these as independent study hours (CMMNA899) with an SMC professor, or, preferably, enroll in CMMNA896051 Mass Com Research II (available through LORA).  I am the instructor of record for Mass Com Research II, and this course will be available for 3 hours of, basically, independent-study graduate credits.
