RE: Wikipedia assignment [CMMNA100]

March 30, 2009

From today’s TechCrunch:

Microsoft To Shutter Encarta, Read All About It On Wikipedia

by Jason Kincaid on March 30, 2009

***

Note especially this:

For a full history of Encarta, be sure to check out its comprehensive Wikipedia entry, which has already been updated to reflect Encarta’s shutdown. Encarta’s entry on itself doesn’t mention anything about its demise, and actually seems to have less information than the Wikipedia article.

Also, I was little surprised that almost everyone mentioned accuracy as an important criterion to use in evaluating Wikipedia.  But no one thought to check the accuracy of alternative sources of information — as did this article.

Brief review of current Media Play assignment…

March 16, 2009

…which is to post your personal game history within your masscomm.loyno.edu server space.

Note: these instructions assume you are at the mac computers in the Media Play classroom.  If you are not, then tweaking these instructions may be required.  But the gist will remain the same.

1.  Create your personal game history.  Save it.  Can be pretty much any file type, but html is going to work best.

2.  Fire up filezilla and connect to host (masscomm.loyno.edu) using your class logon name and password.  (You will need to do this using the sftp option if you are off campus.)

3.   You should see a bunch of folders in the right half of the filezilla screen.  One of these folders is called “Sites.”

4.  Drag (copy) the file you created in step #1 into the “Sites” folder.

5.  If you’ve done the above properly, you now should be able to see your personal game history file inside your browser using this URL:  http://www.masscomm.loyno.edu/~YourLogonName/NameOfFile.  For instance, here’s the file I placed in my space as a demo in class:  http://www.masscomm.loyno.edu/~dmyers/index.html

6.  Go to the class Blackboard site and update the Wiki page containing all the class links with the URL from step #5.  Again, you can note the “Myers example” on that page.

That’s it.

If the file you created has links to other files, make sure these are working properly.  In order for them to be working properly, you should either link to an existing webpage (outside masscomm.loyno.edu), or you should copy whatever you are linking to into your “Sites” folder (inside masscomm.loyno.edu) and then link to it there.

NPR interview with Wikileaks

March 16, 2009

If you can stomach the first 40 seconds of NPR self-serving promotions (and the last 10 sec), then you can listen to the 5 min interview.

Most interesting, I think, is the calm and direct manner in which Wikileaks reacts to the conventional attitudes of the conventional journalism culture, as championed by the bastion of our cultural conventions in journalism and elsewhere, NPR [insert light orchestral music bg here].
