Brief review: Online file sharing.

May 31, 2009

Just finished trying bunch of stuff to share large folder online.  So, while I’m thinking about it and it’s fresh on my mind, here’s the story on free file sharing services (in reverse order of usefulness/value):

Mediafire.  Unlimited storage w/ unlimited advert clutter.  No thanks.

Glide OS.  10G free.  Clever programming.  But too long to set up and too funky.  Maybe if you live in France or something.

4shared.  5G free.  Not bad, but gimps downloading with countdown timer and must logon every 30 days.

Windows Skydrive.  25G free.  Okay, but where’s the multiple/bulk file uploads?

Boxnet. 1G free.  Nice overall, but requires registration, which is killer.

Dropbox.  2G free.  Sentimental favorite, but requires registration, which is killer.  Still best for personal use, though.

Drop.io.  Measly 200MB free; ease of access (no registration) seals the deal.  But why isn’t one of the “view” options a “desktop folder” style?

If you just want to sync:  Dropbox/Mozy/Syncplicity.  Work fine.

Iphone apps:  Soonr trying hard, but who the heck knows what they’re doing with their interface.  Zumodrive blah.  See Boxnet above.  Readdle overpriced and cumbersome.  Drop.io wins again.

Two things.

First, there are a lot of state governments that copy your DNA when you are arrested.  Hospitals substitute being born for being arrested, but same thing basically.  And (I note in passing), in New Orleans, you can be arrested for lots of petty things and/or get born a lot.

Second, the RIAA and such (which, increasingly, simply means the federal government) really don’t want you to copy anything from anybody.

So, here’s my question:  If I sell my and my baby’s DNA to the RIAA, do we get the same DRM protection as Spore?
