Was Twixt’s play positive play?

July 10, 2009

I think we have come to the conclusion that Twixt broke no game rules inside RV. That’s good. That’s a step forward. Let’s try another step.

Could it possibly be that Twixt tried to make playing by the rules in RV fun!?  And that he might have, at least in part, succeeded!?

(And, if so, where does all that so-called griefing go?)

…from the chatlog Freedom server:

  • GO TWIXT! CHAMPION MISSES YOU
  • I’m just kidding Twixt. You’ve kept the chat lively the past few nights at least. Not that I take part. ^_^
  • I rather found him/her to be quite entertaining in RV on champion to be honest. One of the better players out there.
  • I think everyone in vori are a bunch of noobs 0_o twixt use to fight us 8 v 1 back in the day.
  • But to be fair, despite his tedious and quite frankly ineffective tactics he doesnt fill the broadcast with abuse and crap like some players.
  • LoL! I love fighting Twixt.
  • His timing is phenomonal and very good strategist imo even if he is considered “cheap”. He is what i would consider when good heroes go Bad.
  • My take is that he is just playing his game, and probably got sick of people whining in bcast at him. I’m talking before he started chattering back and posting his lists. People used to trash talk him and he didnt even respond.
  • love this thread
  • That is a direct reference to me. I personally generated that Twixtism.
  • TWIXT IS A BEAST
  • He’s always entertaining for sure, and this thread can never die.
  • twixt write me a poem!
  • I don’t mind, I find it a fun game. Gives me a challange to overcome.
  • Hoping to make the list
  • This thread just keeps on winning.
  • Twixt is delicious
  • Mostly harmless.

One thing you need to understand, is everyone has an opinion. What you, and others, find fun is not neccesarily what the majority find fun.

You put the emphasis on the wrong section, it should have been on “at least in part”.

If you really want to explore this concept, buy Guild Wars (really cheap now, and no montly sub), and try RPing (roleplaying). You’ll find another ‘type’ of griefing – another division in what the community regards as “fun”.

You’ll also find that the majority of the community simply don’t care to comment one way or another.

Conversely, you could also say that those who were using the heavys to farm were “disrupting” the “win the zone” game that twixt (and possibly others like him how were too oppressed by the social standard to stick it out in the long term) was attempting to play.

When informed that their “farming” or compromised “trading” of pillboxes was disruptive to the “zone win” game that was originally intended by the developers, when they continued to do it, would that not also be considered griefing?

From what I understand of the study, Dr. Meyers (twixt) intended to play the game, which by its very nature, was designed as a massively multiplayer fight of good against evil. both sides being represented by both npcs and players.

Its like the major social base of CoX decided that instead of playing the Heroes/Villians version of Capture the Flag, they instead decided to use the area as Harvest Moon meets a chatroom. o.o

Aside from that, by playing the game in the way he saw as being “correct”, and being able to stick it out, he did provide a context for others to have fun, if only through the nature of pvp interaction, through watching the pvp, or through commenting on his gameplay and interactions after the fact. As an outside observer, it seems there hasn’t been any real physical or psychological harm from his actions, or none that would not inevitably occurred at some later date due to another player choosing to “play the game” while adhering to the idea that heroes are the enemies of villians, as laid out by the nature of the world as it was designed (a comic book world a la DC or Marvel). If his actions as a player in the game were indeed so potentially harmful, then the ones who should be called to account for the allowance of such a system to be in place would be the game developers themselves, who designed the pvp mechanics, and created the heroes vs. villians interaction in the first place.

(note, I’m hoping this post actually makes since, as I have now been awake nearly 24 hours. *falls over)

    Matsu, you made sense.

But however you spin it, he did ‘grief’. And yes, Dr Myers, griefing was from both sides.

I remember being “exhibit A” for your twisted experiments you rascal :(

“Gordon Scumway, Hoho, more loot lootboy”

Your merciless taunts scarred me for life and made my gaming experience so miserable. Now I find that much like a sadistic Nazi doctor, you did all of this for laffs and papers. For Shame :(

In my defense it was easier to make friends with the villains to get my 2 billion fake dollars badge, don’t hold against me Dr. Myers I did what I had to do to SURVIVE :(

Also I want to do a paper on that big Yellow Tooth you have, it gets me all Kabuki’ed out. :(

Thank you for the fun times Dr. Myers, it was fun seeing you jump in front of me for heavies and stealing them for your own reindeer games, but the time wouldn’t have gone by nearly as fast without your fun-filled antics to make the zone more cheerful.

P.S. I want lecture residuals for my name being used (no sad face here I used too many already) just kidding u.

  5. James Randolph Says:

I suggest you move on to World of Warcraft and EVE. What you’ve done doesn’t even begin to compare to the griefing tactics used in those games. Someone of your talents clearly needs to take this to a bigger venue.

I really look forward to seeing what you’ll do to people on those games. Watching the tears you cause will be huge fun. All of the criers and whiners who don’t know how to PvP will be up in arms.

Yes. You could say it, and so could I:

“…negative and critical reactions to Twixt’s behavior can be seen as non-conforming and “deviant” in prioritizing a limited set of players’ interests and concerns.” [fr the paper]

schum: got your back (long as you play hero)

Come play Conan with us qt. The VORI fun gang is waiting for you again, this time you 2 forces can team up to be baddos of Tyranny.

Might as well since you have 2 free weeks, thanks to desperate Funcom.

If you go to Tyranny PvP server, talk to War Dynamics or Potens, they will be vare happy and you can have more research material, everyone wins!

  11. Matsu Says:

Dr. Myers: Yeah, but I said it in laymans terms? Y’know…in a way that the 12 year olds might have a hope in hell of understanding….but yeah, we did say basically the same thing. :P

Well, ganbatte! Don’t let the haters get you down.
